Gamecock Sports: Game Prediction - Gamecocks vs. Missouri

Roller Coaster of Emotion
Everything was playing out perfectly for the Gamecocks last weekend, Georgia and Florida were losing and the Gamecocks were winning. But then the offense sputtered, Connor Shaw got hurt, the coaching staff wasted not one but two timeouts, and Tennessee kicked a game winning field goal in the final seconds to upset the Gamecocks. Now the Gamecocks have to travel to the other Columbia to face the undefeated Missouri Tigers who are rolling despite losing their starting quarterback two weeks ago.

Missouri
Missouri has charged its way through the SEC in its second year as a member of the conference at a torrid pace. Quarterback James Franklin was primed to lead his team to the promised land but got injured late in the Georgia game. After his injury it seemed that the Tigers would quietly sink away with a "what could have been" season just out of their grasp, but then Maty Mauk took the reins and ran. He picked up right where Franklin had left off and the offense looked like a well oiled machine, not missing a beat.

The Tigers' explosive offense looks to take advantage of a miserable Gamecock secondary with both the passing game and Henry Josey at running back, who went for over 100 yards against Florida last week. The Tigers defense forced Florida to punt eight times last week and only allowed 17 points. This week they will tee off against an abnormal back-up quarterback and an offense that could only move the ball on the ground last week. The strong front seven for Missouri will make it tough for the Gamecocks to run the ball, forcing them to try and find an effective, balanced attack in the air and on land.

South Carolina
To put it mildly the offense looked and played the worst I have seen it in quite some time. Despite several great throws, most of the receivers couldn’t make routine catches and forced the Gamecocks into an early hole. Thankfully, Mike Davis and Demarie Byrd got Carolina back in the game. But this week the Gamecocks face a team that will not give them the opportunity to recover from an early hole.

With Shaw ailing, Dylan Thompson will get his first start of the season and looks to ignite an offense left for dead last week in Knoxville, with the help of the always reliable Mike Davis. That being said, hopefully the Gamecock receivers will make the catches they should make to keep the pressure off the running game.

The defense looked much improved at Tennessee but with the offense struggling they were worn out by the fourth quarter and could not make a stop on Tennessee’s final drive, the drive that led to the game winning field goal as time expired. The defense will look to get a strong push up front to put pressure on Missouri’s inexperienced quarterback and try to force mistakes. The secondary for the Gamecocks must improve quickly if there is any hope of recovering what’s left of this season.

Prediction
The Tigers look like they are headed to Atlanta the first week of December unless someone can derail them and the Gamecocks do not appear to be that team. Missouri will take care of business this weekend and continue on their journey to the Georgia Dome.

Final Score: South Carolina 21, Missouri 35

Tailgate Recipe - Spicy and Sweet Football Deviled Eggs

How cute is this deviled egg meets football recipe? And I love how they are being served on top of garnet napkins! These would be the perfect complement to your Gamecocks football viewing party this weekend or a future Gamecock tailgate.

Gamecock Sports: Game Prediction - Gamecocks vs. Tennessee

The Offense is Alive
Week two of the Gamecocks' 3-week road trip is on deck this week, and after last week’s offensive explosion, it may not be a bad thing. The offense looked as solid as it has been in recent memory, and the defense finally played strong, only allowing one touchdown, which occurred on the opening drive of the game. While it must be taken into perspective, as this all came against a struggling Arkansas team, the Gamecocks may have gotten the confidence boost to carry them through the rest of the season. And it definitely didn’t hurt that Georgia lost to Missouri to keep the Gamecocks hope alive in the SEC East.

Tennessee
The Volunteers are coming off a bye week as they are set to face the Gamecocks in an SEC East matchup, that two weeks ago looked like it could be setting Tennessee up for a breakout season. After scoring late in the fourth quarter to take the lead, the Vols could not finish against Georgia and eventually lost in overtime. It was a heartbreaking loss for both Tennessee and South Carolina as it would have kicked open the door for the Gamecocks path to the SEC title game. But instead the Vols look to get their first SEC win of the season and derail any hope that is left for the Gamecocks.

The always present advantage of playing in Neyland Stadium will surely help Tennessee disorient the Gamecocks offense, which often tries to make changes at the line of scrimmage. New head coach Butch Jones is looking to rebuild a team that was once led by greats Phil Fulmer and Peyton Manning, but was subsequently derailed by Lane Kiffin and Derek Dooley.

Linebacker AJ Johnson will look to have another big game and slow down the Carolina offense as he did against Georgia two weeks back. Johnson has produced double digit tackles in half of his career games for the Volunteers according to their stat records, which includes 47 tackles so far this season. On the offensive side of the ball Rajion Neal will look to record his fourth 100-yard rushing game of the season against the Gamecocks porous defense.

USC
The entire Gamecocks offense put on a show last weekend! It was great to see both Connor Shaw and Dylan Thompson playing at the top of their game, to the point that we even got to see Brendan Nosovitch score his first touchdown as a Gamecock on a 7-yard run at the end of the fourth quarter. Another bright spot in last week’s blowout was the emergence of Shamier Jeffery, you may remember his brother, Alshon! Shamier tallied his first reception at Carolina and ended with 5 receptions on the day.

If Carolina can continue to spread the ball around as they did last week and the run game can continue to be a powerful force, the Gamecocks should continue to put a lot of points on the board, even against the increasingly better defenses they are set to face in the coming weeks. Mike Davis gets better each week. While other defenses are preparing for the Mike Davis they see on film, they are forced to play the Mike Davis who is one step better each week. His ability to run through defenders and get the extra yards after contact are giving Spurrier the option for a more balanced attack.

The other side of that balanced attack is Connor Shaw, who has disproven all of the doubters this season, including myself. While he still has moments that make Gamecock fans want to scream, the fumble in the Georgia game, all in all he is playing the way everyone thought he could, which includes very few turnovers this season. But Connor and Mike both owe all the credit to the remarkable offensive line, who has been the greatest surprise all season. They are the most reliable unit on the team so far this season and have allowed the Head Ball Coach to run his ideal offense.

Prediction
The Gamecocks should take care of business against the Volunteers who have already lost to Oregon, Florida, and Georgia this season and currently sit at 3-3 after winning 3 non-conference games. Despite giving Georgia a big scare two weeks ago, the Vols could not finish the game.

Final Score: South Carolina 35, Tennessee 20

Gamecock Pumpkin Decor Idea

How adorable is this USC pumpkin we spotted on Pinterest? A very easy craft you can DIY to add some Gamecock spirited Fall decor to your home. This would look great in the house as a feature of a table centerpiece, or on your front steps leading to your front door outside.

Buy a pumpkin, spray paint it white, glue on some decorated by you wooden letters (Hobby Lobby, Michaels, Walmart), top with some pretty ribbon tied in a bow and voila!

Gamecock Sports: Game Prediction - Gamecocks vs. Arkansas

On the road again
After being home for one week, the Gamecocks are back on the road this week to start a 3 week stretch of away games. This week starts with the always competitive Arkansas Razorbacks. The Razorbacks come into this week’s matchup with a 3-3 record, but even on their down years, they always give the Gamecocks a challenge. After the way the Gamecocks have played in the 4th quarter this year, there is definitely a reason to be concerned about a potential upset. But the Gamecocks look to have a shakey secondary and make a strong push into the second half of the season.

Arkansas
After starting out the season 3-0 the Razorbacks have gone 0-3 in the last three weeks losing to Rutgers, Texas A&M, and Florida. The loss to Florida last week was their weakest offensive contest yet to date as they only scored 10 points against the Gators. There will be a more vested interest in this game as it is Homecoming week in Fayetteville, and their fan base is fired up about the potential to upset the Gamecocks.

Running back Alex Collins enters this week’s matchup leading the SEC in total rushing yards at 651 and is ranked 4th in average yards per game at 108.5. If he can get going he will give the Gamecocks defense a tough time as they have shown great weakness against the run so far this year. On the other side of the ball Chris Smith is creating chaos for opposing offenses by leading the SEC in sack yards, total sacks, and tackles for loss. The Gamecocks offensive line will have a huge battle on their hands to try and keep Smith away for Connor Shaw and his questionable shoulder.

USC
Carolina’s offense has worked very efficiently so far this season. They have cut down on costly turnovers that have plagued them in years past and found a great running back in Mike Davis. The philosophy of when in doubt give the ball to Mike has proved to be the best offensive strategy along with Connor and Dylan both being efficient when passing the ball.

Unlike in years past, we can no longer rely on the defense to make the big plays so the offense has to protect the ball and put points on the board, especially after seeing the 4th quarter collapses by the defense this year. All year the defense has struggled and it is still yet to be determined what the cause is. Per many sources it seems that players are content to “rest on their laurels” from previous years' successes. That coupled with the constant distraction of Jadeveon Clowney and the coaches publicly bickering and in one instance, fighting on the sideline, it appears that Lorenzo Ward needs to rebuild his once terrifying defense.

Prediction
This game is going to be close and will probably come down to a big special teams play. The Gamecocks will need to rely on Davis to find the holes and score early, hopefully building a big enough lead that the defenses 4th quarter collapse won’t cost them the game.

Final Score: South Carolina 30, Arkansas 27

Gamecock Sports: Game Prediction - Gamecocks vs. Kentucky

{photo source}
The Battle of the Two Quarterback Systems
After scrapping out a win in Orlando last week, the Gamecocks return home for another SEC matchup against the embattled Kentucky Wildcats. Carolina will be in front of another sold out Williams-Brice Stadium this Saturday. The Gamecock faithful are ready tosee this much talked about team light up the scoreboard and not allow the Wildcats to catch up late as has happened in many cases this season so far. Hopefully we’ll see this offense perform to their capability this weekend.

Kentucky Wildcats
The Wildcats are employing a dual quarterback system with Jalen Whitlow and Maxwell Smith. Smith is the more efficient passer and Whitlow is the more efficient runner, but both can make the downfield passes necessary to win. Jojo Kemp, Kentucky’s outstanding freshman running back, will look to expose the defense as has been done earlier this season by the likes of UGA’s Gurley. The big test will come against linebacker Avery Williamson who leads the SEC in tackles. He will be charged with the task of stopping both Mike Davis and the passing game. Which he has proven repeatedly this season that he’s capable of doing.

South Carolina Gamecocks
Despite leaving last week’s game early, Connor Shaw is healthy and will start this weekend for the Gamecocks. Coach Spurrier said earlier this week that he was making the long throws with no issues during practice this week, so there is no reason to hold him back. He did also state that Dylan Thompson would get significant playing time as he has earned the right to play a bigger role in the offense. Mike Davis will look to continue his outburst that started during the second half of the UCF game and shoulder the load to take pressure off the passing game.

The defense continues to get better each week, but they still have a long way to go. The linebackers will face another big test this week against two dual threat quarterbacks. They will also be tasked to stop a young running back that is averaging over 8 yards per carry.

Prediction
Despite the defense not living up to the hype so far this season, the Gamecocks will find a way to slow down the Kentucky offense and limit their time of possession. Carolina’s offense will be successful with both Dylan and Connor at quarterback. They will find a way to get Mike Davis involved early to set the tone for the rest of the game.

Final Score: South Carolina 31, Kentucky 21
